MISIF President Mr Roshan participated as a panellist at the 15th China International Steel Congress in Shanghai on 20 September 2026.
Moderated by Mr Luo Tiejun, Vice Chairman of CISA, the panel featured leaders Dr Karel Eloot, Senior Partner, McKinsey, Mr Paul Mullins, CEO, Kallanish Limited, Dr Veysel Yayan, Secretary-General, the Turkish Steel Producers Association and Ms Gulbahor Tozhimirzaeva, Chairwoman, Uzbekistan Metallurgy Association.
Mr Roshan shared Malaysia’s perspective on ASEAN’s evolving steel landscape, noting strong demand fundamentals but rising competitive pressures from global overcapacity, shifting trade flows and increasing protectionism. He emphasised that under the “ASEAN Manufacturing” agenda and RCEP, Malaysia should focus on capability over volume, positioning itself as a higher‑value, reliable and increasingly low‑carbon steel hub within ASEAN.
On trade dynamics, he highlighted that trade friction is not inevitable, Malaysia’s trade‑remedy actions follow WTO rules and aim to ensure fair competition. He emphasised the need for strategic resilience rather than self‑sufficiency, and open trade on a level playing field, supported by transparent rules of origin, effective customs enforcement and credible standards.
MISIF congratulates CISA and MC-CCPIT on hosting a successful congress and looks forward to strengthening collaboration under the MISIF–CISA MOU, including technical exchanges, industry dialogue and joint initiatives to support the region’s transition towards higher‑value and greener steel.
